Introduction:
ThisstudyaimstoexploretheprosodicfeaturesofChinesesupersegmentalunitsinEnglishlearners’reading,andtoprovideinsightsintothechallengesanddifficultiesthatChineselearnersfaceinacquiringEnglishprosody.Thisreportsummarizestheprogressmadeinthefirsthalfoftheproject,includingthetheoreticalframework,researchdesign,datacollection,andpreliminaryanalysis.
TheoreticalFramework:
Thestudyisbasedonthetheoreticalframeworkofprosodictransfer,whichsuggeststhatlanguagelearnersmaytransfertheirnativelanguageprosodicpatternstotheirL2andthusstruggletoacquireL2prosody.InthecaseofChineselearnersofEnglish,thesupersegmentalunitsinChinese,suchastone,stress,andintonation,mayaffecttheirproductionandperceptionofEnglishprosody,leadingtoforeignaccentandcommunicationbreakdowns.
ResearchDesign:
Thestudyinvolvestwotasks:(1)readingaloudapassageinEnglishwithvaryingprosodicpatterns,and(2)ratingthenaturalnessofperceivedprosodicpatternsinEnglishsentences.Theparticipantsare30ChinesespeakersofEnglishatintermediatelevelwhohavelearnedEnglishforatleast3years.ThedataarethenanalyzedusingacousticandstatisticalmethodstoexaminethedifferencesbetweenChineseandEnglishprosodicfeatures.
DataCollection:
Thereadingtaskconsistsof10Englishpassages,eachwithdifferentcombinationsofstress,intonation,andrhythm.Theratingtaskinvolves30Englishsentences,eachproducedwithdifferentstresspatterns.Theparticipantsareaskedtoratethenaturalnessofeachsentenceonascalefrom1to7.BothtasksarerecordedusingPraatsoftware,whichallowsfortheextractionofacousticfeaturessuchaspitch,duration,andintensity.
