Perseus was the son of Danae and Danae was daught of a king. It should be mentioned that Danae gave birth to her son Perseus when she was still a virgin. A virgin means a girl who is not married or touched by any man. So, it was said that the son’s father was Zeus, who became golden rain to make Danae preganent and then to give birth to the baby. It is interesting that there are so many ancient stories about a child born by a virgin. For example, Jesus was born by Mary the virgin, and Romulus, the founder of Rome the city, was also given birth by the virgin Silvia. Both Jesus and Romulus had a god as his father. So, like Jesus and Romulus, Perseus had a god as his father and he was born by a virgin. Unfortunately this part of the story has not been written into your textbook. I just present it to you as an additional material for you to know more about the background of this story. According to your text, Danae and Perseus were put into a chest and thrown into the sea because there was an oracle that Perseus would kill his grandfather when he grew up. Frightened by the oracle, his grandfather the king ordered to throw Danae and Perseus into the sea. But they were saved by a kind fisherman and were taken to Polydectes, the king of the island. When Perseus grew up, he was asked by the king Polydectes to get the head of Medusa. Medusa was one of the three horrible sisters who were called Gorgons. The Gorgons
