ABSTRACT

ThisreportisaChinesetranslationofThePacificIslands:AnEncyclopedia(Excerpts)

inaccordancewithcommunicativetranslationtheory.Thisstudyfocusesonhowtheauthor

makethechoiceinthemethodsoftranslatingofadverbialclausesinaccordancewiththe

communicativetranslationtheory,soastorealizeahighdegreeofcommunicativeeffect

betweentheoriginalandthetranslatedtext.

CommunicativetranslationtheoryproposedbyPeterNewmarkistakenasaguiding

theory.Itscoreideaisthatdifferenttranslationmethodsshouldbechosenaccordingtothe

typeoftext.Communicativetranslationtheoryfocusesonspecificlanguageandculture,

emphasizestheaccuratetransmissionofthecommunicativeinformationofthetranslated

textinthetargetlanguage,andpaysmoreattentiontothetargetlanguagereaders;the

translatedtextshouldbeinlinewiththeexpressionhabitsofthetargetlanguage,theform

ofwhichshouldbeasexplicitaspossible,thelanguageofwhichshouldbefluentand

concise,andthetranslatedtextshouldbesmoothandeasytounderstandasawholewith

clear,directlogic,andstandardized,naturallanguage.Fourmethodsoftranslating

adverbialclausesaresummarizedaccordingtofourtypesofcommonadverbialclausesin

translatedtextsbyreadingtheliterature,analyzingthespecificcasesinthebook,and

combiningwiththetheoreticalguidance:restructuring,lineartranslation,conversionand

omission.Themethodofrestructuringandlineartranslationareusedinthetranslationof

adverbialclausesofconcessiontosolvetheproblemofthedifferentpositionofEnglish

andChineseadverbials;thetranslationofadverbialclausesofreasonneedsthemethodof

restructuringandomissiontoadjusttheorderofcausesandresults,soastomakethem

conformtothebasiclogicoftheChineselanguage;thet
