Omissionininterpretingsometimesoccursasanerror,andsometimesitisa

proactivetacticemployedbyinterpretersconsciously.Previousstudiescenteredon

omissioninsimultaneousinterpreting,whileonlyafewfocusedonconsecutive

interpreting.

Thisreportisbasedontheauthor’ssimulatedconsecutiveinterpretationofthe

roundtableforum“AIand2030AgendaforSustainableGoals”attheWorldArtificial

IntelligenceConference(WAIC2020).Sincemostspeechesdeliveredatroundtable

discussionsarespontaneous,oneoftheprominentfeaturesiscolloquial.Tokeepthe

targettextsuccinctandclear,theauthorproactivelyemployedomissionasatactic,

whichisthemajortopicofthisreport.GroundedonthetypologyproposedbyBarik,

BesienandMeuleman,andWeiZhang,thisstudyexploresactiveomission,namely

omissionasatactic,andpassiveomissioninconsecutiveinterpreting,namelyomission

asanerror.

Inaddition,thereportprobesintothemotivatingfactorsbehindthem.Theanalysis

oftheauthor’sinterpretationperformancerevealedthatthemajorityoftheomissions

inthisreportfallundertheactivegroup,whichisadoptedbytheauthortoimprove

communicationefficiency.Specifically,theauthorusedomissionasatactictofilterout

incorrectorinappropriatecontentproducedbyspeakers,on-site,excludeformulaic

expressions,andavoidrepetitionsandredundancies.Asmallproportionofomissions

inthisreportbelongtopassiveomission.Pressureandanxiety,difficultiesin

terminology,comprehensionbarriers,andlimitedmemoryloadarecausesofpassive

omissioninthisreport.Thepurposeofthestudyistohaveabetterunderstandingof

omission,andprovidesomeinspirationfortheauthor’sfutureinterpretingtasks.
