historyofjournalism.TheauthorofthebookisMartinConboy,anemeritusprofessor
ofJournalismHistoryattheUniversityofSheffield.Inthebook,Martinmainly
expoundsonthetechnologicaldevelopmentinthejournalisticindustryfromprinted
newstodigitalnews,andalsoexploresaseriesofimportantissues,suchasthe
reasonsbehindvarioustechnologiesandtheirapplications,theimpactofthesenew
technologiesonthejournalism,andtheculturalshiftstheyhavecausedinsociety.
Thewriterofthisreporttranslatesthefirstchapterofthebook.Duringthe
processoftranslation,thewriterfindsthatthebookcontainsmanyEnglishcomplex
sentences.Thesesentencesoftenhaveonemainclausewithseveralsubordinate
clauses,andvariousconjunctionsandprepositionsareusedtoconnectdifferentlayers
ofinformation.ComplexsentencesareimportantandcommoninEnglishbutrarein
Chinesewhichtendstouseshorterandsimplersentencestructures.Thisdifference
betweenthetwolanguagesposesalotofdifficultiesfortranslation.Therefore,this
reportfocusesonthetranslationofEnglishcomplexsentencesinthebook.
Thetheoreticalframeworkofthisreportisthefunctionalequivalencetheoryfirst
advancedin1964andlatermodifiedin1986byEugeneA.Nida.Heputsforwardtwo
typesofequivalenceintranslation:formalequivalenceandfunctionalequivalence.In
thetranslationofcomplexsentencesinthisbook,duetothedifferencesbetweenthe
EnglishandChineselanguages,thetranslatorcannotpreserveboththeformandthe
contentofthesourcetextintranslationinmanycases.Sincethisbookisan
informativetext,itstranslationshouldfocusontheaccuraterenderingofinformation.
Therefore,thewriterofthereporttakesfunctionalequ
