The Cultural Turn in Translation Studies 靳柳悦 赵利芳 房硕 王哲 What is the cultural turn? How did it happen? The Cultural Turn in Translation Studies examines a number of orientations that emphasize the cultural, historical and ideological dimensions of translation, highlighting the fact that translators are never innocent and their work is marked, in one way or another, by the time and cultures in which they live and by the power relations that operate in various cultures. This particular “cultural turn” has had its own evolution, from the polysystem theory, which is the formalist/structuralist direction in literary Translation Studies, to gender-oriented and postcolonial approaches, which have been informed by hermeneutics and, increasingly, by deconstructionist insights. The move from translation as a text to translation as culture and politics is what they call it a Cultural Turn in translation studies and became the ground for a metaphor adopted by Bassnett and Lefevere in 1990.
