According to Chinese legends,the animals argued among themselves adout who was to be the first in the cycle.The gods held a competition for the 12 animals:The order in which the animals reached the opposite side of the river bank would indicate their order in the zodiac.All the animals jumped in the river except the rat,who jumped on the back of the ox.On the order relates to the time when the animals are busiest,so because the rat likes to go out at midnight,it comesfirst in the cycle. The Chinese believe each of the 12 animals has their own unique characteristics,and people’s personalities may vary according to their animal signs 属相).For example ,the rat is considered to be lively ,alert and flexible,and people born under this sign are usually thought to be smart .Oxen are usually thought to be smart.Oxen are patient,quiet,and hard working. People born in the Year of the Ox are considered mild-mannered and diligent,but can be extremely obstinate 固执). The Chinese also have their secular 世俗) ‘philosophy’ about the chinese zodiac. In Chinese culture ,the zodiac has the power of affecting marriage .Some Chinese believe that the animal signs of a couple should be compatible .For example ,if someone born in the Year of Dragon, there’s a chance that their parents will disapprove of the marriage. When a couple plans to have a baby ,they often consider the animal signs very carefully.Many people want their baby to be born in the Year of Dragon ,because the dragon has a high repuyation in Chinese culture ,and is the symbol of authority ,dignity, honour,and success. ‘Dragon baby booms ’can put a strain on educational resources and lead to fierce competition.
