recognitionofandencouragementforallscientistsinChina.”

TuYouyouwasborninZhejiangProvince,China,on30December,1930.She

studiedmedicineatPekingUniversityHealthScienceCentre.Aftergraduation,she

becameamemberofChinaAcademyofChineseMedicalSciences.Later,she

studiedChinesemedicinefortwoandahalfyearswithexpertsinthefield[4]from

whomshegainedadeepknowledgeabouttraditionalpractices.

In1969,TuYouyouwaschosentoestablishateamtofindacurefor

malaria—adiseasethatkilledmillionsofpeopleeveryyear.Acrosstheworld，

scientistshadbeentryingtofindacure.Theytestedmorethan240，000chemicals
