Abstract:

Legallanguageisanimportantpartofthelegalsystem,andeffectivelytranslatinglegallanguageisanimportanttaskforlegalprofessionals.However,legallanguageoftencontainsambiguityandcanbedifficulttotranslateaccurately.ThisstudyusestheframeworkofpragmaticsanddiscourseanalysistoexaminetheambiguityinChineselegallanguageanditstranslationintoEnglish.Specifically,itfocusesontheChineseCriminalLawasacasestudy.

Throughacorpusanalysis,thisstudyidentifiesthevariousformsofambiguityinChineselegallanguage.Theseincludelexicalambiguity,syntacticambiguity,andpragmaticambiguity.Thestudythenexaminesthestrategiesusedbylegaltranslatorstodealwiththeseambiguities,includingusingcontextandpragmaticcuestoinfermeaning.However,thestudyalsoidentifiessomelimitationsofthesestrategies,particularlyinsituationswherethereisalackofcontextorwheremultipleinterpretationsarepossible.

Overall,thisstudycontributestoourunderstandingoflegallanguageambiguityandtranslationintheChinesecontext.Italsohighlightstheimportanceofconsideringpragmaticsanddiscourseanalysisinlegaltranslationandsuggestsareasforfurtherresearch.
