—Thispaperdevelopsasimpleandlow-costmethod
for3D,high-ratevehiclestateestimation,speciallydesignedfor
free-flyingMicroAerialVehicles(MAVs).Wefuseobservations
frominertialmeasurementunitsandtherecentlyappearedlow-
costopticalflowsmartcameras.Thesesmartcamerasintegrate
asonaraltimeter,atriaxialgyrometerandanopticalflow
sensor,anddirectlyprovidemetricego-motioninformationin
theformofbodyvelocitiesandaltitude.Comparedtostate-
of-the-artvisual-inertialodometrymethods,weareableto
drasticallyreducethecomputationalloadinthemainprocessor
unit,andobtainanaccurateestimationofthevehiclestateat
ahighupdaterateof100Hz.WethutendthecurrentuseFig.1.QuadrotorusedintheexperimentswiththeIMUandopticalflow
