The growth in demand for tourism The growth in demand for tourism is a reflection of a range of changes that occurred in society, particularly since the onset of the Industrial Revolution. The significance of the mass participation in international tourism from an environmental viewpoint, is that an increasing number and variety of physical and cultural environments are being exposed to tourism, with a range of consequences. Tourism is not something than happens by chance but is an activity that has developed as a consequence of the type of societies in which we live. Industrialisation and tourism: laying the conditions for the growth of contemporary tourism The Industrial Revolution brought great economic and social changes in society. The major change dating to this period was the urbanization of societies of western Europe and North America. The Industrial Revolution also made society much more time-conscious than it had been previously.People can take defined periods of time off work ,and travel long distances away from home environment to other destinations. Another major change association with the Industrial Revolution was a technological advance in transport.Key technical advancements that encourages mass participation in tourism in the 19th century were the development of the railways and steamships. In the 20th century, widespread ownership of the motor car and the development of the jet engine in the 1950s, have facilitated travel by making it easier and quicker, safer and comfortable. In current society, the role of information technology is an increasingly important influence upon tourism. Besides technological advancement, the growth of tourism has also been encouraged by the emergence of tour operators.
