China.Magazines,assignificantmediaforinformationdissemination,theirtranslationresearch

shouldnotbeoverlooked.

SanlianLifeWeekisaweeklymagazineknownforitsnotableblendofcultureandnews.

OnOctober22,2012,lessthantwoweeksafterMoYanwontheNobelPrizeinLiterature,

SanlianLifeWeekpublishedanewissuefeaturingtheNobellaureateonitscover.Thecover

story,titledJieshiMoYan,sevenarticlesintotal,aimstointroduceMotoreadersandexplain

therelationshipbetweenhisworksandChinesesociety.Thistranslatorselectedtwoarticles

fromthecoverstory,namely,TheMoYanIKnowandMoYanandHisHometown,asthesource

textforherdegree-orientedtranslationproject.

Inthesetwononfictionalworks,thetranslatorfindsalargenumberofculture-specific

items(CSIs).BasedonLiuMiqing’sandNida’sinterpretationofcultureandlanguage,the

translatorfirstcategorizedtheCSIsinthesourcetextintofourstrata,namely,propernouns,

CSIsinthematerialstratum,thebehavioralandcustomarystratum,andthelinguisticstratum

foreasierresearchanddiscussion.ThetranslatorthenappliesthetranslationstrategiesforCSIs
