Chapter15GeorgeEliotLifeandWorksGeorgeEliot(1819–1880)borninWarbury,WarwickshireIn1849,afterherfather’sdeath,shevisitedtheContinentandlivedforsomemonthsinGeneva.Herfirstpublishedstory,“AmosBarton”,appearedinBlackwood’sMagazine,followedbytwoothertales,“Mr.Gilfil’sLoveStory”and“Janet’sRepentance”,allofwhichwerelatercollectedinScenesofClericalLife(1858),publishedunderthemasculinepseudonymof“GeorgeEliot”.
FelixHolt,thecomplicatedstoryofayoungradicalinthe1830s,wasinthetraditionofDisraeli’spoliticalnovels.Hermajorpoeticalwork,TheSpanishGypsy,ablankversedrama,showedthatherrealtalentlayinprose.Shecaughtachillataconcertanddiedafterfourdaysofillness,onDecember22,1880.Chapter15GeorgeEliotLifeandWorks
Eliotdidnotbegintowriteuntilshewasnearlyfortyyearsofage,butshewasthemostimportantlivingEnglishnovelistofthedecadebetween1870and1880.SheisoftencalledthemostintellectualoftheEnglishnovelists.Inhernovels,shehadacomprehensivestudyofthevillagelifeinthe1830s.Shecombinedahumourousandaffectionatetreatmentofruralandsmalltowncharacterswithadeepanalysisofmajorcharacterswhoaspiretomorethanthemediocrerolesthatsocietycouldoffer.Hernovelsarealsocalleddidacticnovels.Inmanyofhernovels,onecanfindthatshewasalwaysconcernedwithvirtueandmorality.Hernovelsaregoodexamplesofmoralcriticism.Amonghermanynovels,mostcriticsagreethatMiddlemarchisrequiredreadinginuniversityEnglishcourses,anditisregardedashergreatestnovel,probablyinspiredbyherlifeatCoventry.ThestoryfollowsthesexualandChapter15GeorgeEliotBriefComment
