LifeandWorksPhilipArthurLarkin(1922–1985)borninCoventryintheEnglishmidlandsHeattendedschoolthereandafterthatwenttoOxford,wherehewasassociatedwiththewritersof“theMovement”,agroupofyoungpoetsandnovelistswhorejectedtheprevailingfashionforwritinginthestyleofYeatsandDylanThomas.Heworkedinlibrarieshisentirelife,inShropshireandLeicester,andthenatQueen’sCollegeinBelfast,andfinallyattheUniversityofHull.Chapter35PhilipArthurLarkin
Larkinhadprovedtobeoneofthebestpoetsof“theMovement”,whilehisbestpoemscontinuedthetraditionassociatedwithThomasHardy.Hisstyleismodernandprecise,andheiswidelyregardedasoneofthegreatEnglishpoetsduringthelatterhalfofthe20thcentury.Hisfirstbookofpoetry,TheNorthShip,waspublishedin1945,followedbytwonovels,JillandAGirlinWinter,buthecametoprominencein1955withthepublicationofhissecondcollectionofpoems,TheLessDeceived,followedbyTheWhitsunWeddingsandHighWindows.HereceivedmanyhonoursincludingtheQueen’sGoldMedalforPoetry.Hewasoffered,butdeclined,thepositionofPoetLaureatein1984,followingthedeathofJohnBetjeman.LifeandWorksChapter35PhilipArthurLarkin
