BergmanngliacellsareadiscreteradialgliapopulationsurroundingPurkinjecellsinthecerebeHarcortex.AI—
thoughBergmanngliaareessentialforthedevelopmentandcorrectarborizationofPurkinjecells,littleisknown
abouttheregulationofthiscellpopulationafterthedevelopmentalphase.Inanefforttocharacterizethispopulation
atthemolecularlevel,wehaveanalyzedmarkerexpressionandestablishedthatadultBergmanngliaexpressSoxl,
Sox2andSox9,afeatureotherwiseassociatedwithneuralstemcells(NSCs).Inthepresentstudy,wehavefurther
analyzedthedevelopmentalpatternofSoxl—expressingcellsinthedevelopingcerebellum.W ereportthatbeforebe-
comingrestrictedtothePurkinjecelllayeKSoxl-positivecellsarepresentthroughouttheimmaturetissue,andthat
thesecellsshow characteristicsofBergmanngliaprogenitors.OurstudyshowsthattheseprogenitorsexpressSox1.
Sox2andSox9,asignaturemaintainedthroughoutcerebellarmaturationintoadulthood.W henisolatedinculture,
theSoxl—expressingcerebellarpopulationexhibitedneurosphere—formingability,NSC-markercharacteristics,and
demonstratedmultipotencyattheclonalleve1.Ourresultsshow thattheBergmanngliapopulationexpressesSoxl
durin~cerebellardevelopment.andthatthesecellscanbeisolatedandshow stem cellcharacteristicsinvitro,sug—
gestingthattheycouldholdabroaderpotentialthanpreviouslythought.
