Unit 18 Adjustment Learning Objectives By the end of this unit you should be able to have a good command of the form and structure of letters of adjustment; use Writing Techniques in this unit comfortably in your Business English Writing; practise writing letters of adjustment by using some related words; acquire the ability to write letters of adjustment with the help of dictionaries and the Internet. Task One: Work in pairs and have a discussion to find out some useful words and phrases for writing a letter of adjustment. Just try your best and then exchange your findings with other pairs in your class. Task Two: After finishing Task one, you are to do a group work—find out how many parts a letter of adjustment should include. Then check your findings with your teacher. Presentation Adjustment is the response to a claim or complaint. Every claim or complaint is very important for both the claimant and the claimed, so is the adjustment. At the claimed party’s side, proper adjustment can both minimize the damage of its reputation and protect its justified economic interests. Depending on specific cases, a claim or complaint may be compensated or may not get the adjustment as requested. Business Situation Peter Guffy has received Henry’s claim for the delivery of garments of wrong colors. Through examination, he finds that his company has confused Henry’s order with another similar order, so he agrees to give an adjustment to Henry. Sample 1 ① Dear Henry, ② We are sorry to learn that the color of the garments under Contract No. MN-98 didn’t correspond with the sample. ③ After careful examination, we found that we had misfilled your contract with another one which was different from your order only in the color of the garments. ④ We have arranged for the delivery of replacement as you requested and they will reach you within this week.
