Abstract: Negativelycharged sulfonic group introduced by sulfonation derivatization not on
ly induced the M S/ M S fragmentation of peptides and produced an exclusive series of ytype
ion spectrum, but also changed the charge distribution of sulfonated peptides and made the
enrichment of target peptides by ionexchange chromatography possible. This techni ue e
normously facilitates de novo peptide se uencing and protein identification by mass spec
trometry. T he procedure of sulfonation derivatization and its application in the study of pro
teomics are review ed.
