An interpretation of the diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines for cough (2009 Edition)
Coughing is one of the most common symptoms in medical patients. Its etiology is complex and can easily be misdiagnosed and treated. Especially for patients with chronic cough with no obvious abnormalities in chest imaging, clinicians are more puzzled. With the concern about cough, China has carried out clinical studies on the diagnosis and treatment of cough in recent years, and preliminary results have been obtained. In order to further standardize the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic cough, strengthen the clinical and basic research of cough, respiratory diseases branch of Chinese Medical Association asthma group organized experts, clinical research results on cough reference at home and abroad, in 2005 jointly formulated the guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of cough (Draft). The 2005 edition guidelines have played a good guiding role in clinical practice. In the past three years, many experts have received valuable comments and suggestions. To further improve the guidelines and to review recent advances in cough research both at home and abroad, the asthma group revised it in 2008 and will be published in 2009. The main amendments are as follows: the 2009 edition of the guide is expanded to 9 themes and annexes from 7 themes and annexes in the 2005 edition. The new subacute (duration of 3 to 8 weeks) in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic cough, cough and cough treatment experience of two special definition, expectorant treatment of 2 parts, and in the annex supplement evaluation and the effect of the content of cough severity.
