Abstract
One of the solutions which emerged in
response to the Iimitations of modernism
was the issue of‘in-between’.Concepts
about in—between have been suggested
and argued simultaneously in the West and
Far East. This paper aims at comparison
of the theories and practices,concerning
in-between,by two representative theorists
of each region;Van Eyck and Kurokawa.
Dimensions of in.between.factors for
practicing in—between,and types of the
relationship between two elements which
are the subject of integration, are clarified.
And,comparison is done through using
the above criteria.

1.Introduction
In despite of positive effects of Modernism
in development of architecture,jts limitations.
such as lack of spatial and functional
integration,are inevitable.In respcnse to such
problems,at the end of modernism period,
various movements eStab|Ished and various
ideas were suggested.Among such ideas。
concepts about the importance of in-between
space have been raised. And among them,
conce}pts belong to Van Eyck of Team 10 in the
West, and Kurokawa of Metabolism Group in
Japan are quite significant and influential.
The role of in-between for supporting fluidity
of space,in both urban and architecturaI scales,
js jnevitable.Thus.there have been various
researches concerning this concept.On the
other hand, there are separated studies about
Van Eyck and Kurokawa from various points of
view,as well.
This study aims at a comparison of in-
between concepts,which simultaneously were
discussed in the West and Far East。by these
two representative theorists of each region。
