Product and service delivery enterprises are paying increasing attention to the use of teams in organizations and for good reason. One national survey (Wellins, Byham, and Wilson, 1990), found that senior managers reported improved quality, increased productivity, reduced operating cost, increased job satisfaction, greater organizational flexibility, and improved ability to attract and retain the best people, as significant reasons for their use of teams. The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (Bermon, 1992) cites improved quality and patient outcomes through the use of empowered teams when presenting its shift from quality assurance to continuous quality improvement (CQI). Also of significant importance to mental health treatment, Freeman-Longo and Ryan (1990) cite the use of teams as a way to reduce liability in negligence suits. In the medical and mental health arenas, Berwick, Godfrey and Roessner (1991) report evidence of improved service and care delivery in hospitals through the use of project teams. Hospital Corporation of America showed significant improvement in patient care, overall service delivery, and administrative management in their hospitals which extensively utilized teams (Walton, 1991). Finally, Burns and Watson (1991) report the ability of an inpatient psychiatric unit to handle a significant increase in demand for services while improving the quality of care through the utilization of a well developed, interdisciplinary team. One could conclude that the development and utilization of teams within mental health treatment systems are not only helpful, but necessary, yet managers often lack the specific knowledge needed to successfully implement team utilization within their organizations.
