Retelling in written form Dictation: intensive listening Note-taking and retelling: extensive listening The speed of Writing Listening materials Read one passage to you: First: Note-taking Second: Retelling in written form Last: Dictation It suddenly occurred to me that I would like to have a wife. I want a wife who will not bother me with complaints about a wife’s duties. But I want a wife who will listen to me when I feel the need to explain a rather difficult point I have come across in my course of studies. I want a wife who is sensitive to my sexual needs. And, of course, I want a wife who will not demand sexual attention when I am not in the mood for it. If, by chance, I find another person more suitable as the wife than the wife I already have, I want the liberty to replace my present wife with another one. Who wouldn’t want a wife? Note-taking: It occurred…I want a wife. No complaints about … duties Listen to me … I need to talk…difficult points…studies Sensitive to sexual needs Not demand for…I am not in the mood… Find a more suitable wife…replace… Who wouldn’t want a wife? Rewrite the passage according to your notes. Improving your rewriting and check it to make it a dictation. Maybe one more time! Dictation: Sentence as Unit: Take sentence as the unit in listening comprehension. Do not listen to isolated words or phrases, which has negative effect on your understanding. How do we dictate? 1. Speed your writing. 2. Use shorthand: students---stu.s spent---spe 3. Leave enough space to complete the the words in the sentence. e.g. Last month Ted spent ten days at the factory where his father worked. La mon Ted spe ten d at th factory wh his fa wor. Short-term memory only. Try to complete the sentence as early as possible! Usually, in dictation exercises, the materials will be read for three times.
