Abstract
This proposal aims to investigate the discourse features and textual patterns of academic book reviews in English, particularly focusing on the evaluation section of the reviews. The study will utilize a corpus of academic book reviews compiled from various academic journals in the fields of humanities and social sciences. The corpus will be annotated with information such as the genre of the book reviewed, the publisher, the disciplinary background of the reviewer, and the overall evaluation of the book. The analysis will adopt a quantitative and qualitative approach, including techniques for corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, and critical appraisal.
Introduction
Academic book reviews are important sources of information for scholars and students alike in various disciplines. Book reviews not only offer insights and evaluations of the books, but also provide a forum for intellectual exchange and debate. As such, book reviews are an integral part of the academic discourse community, and they reflect the norms and values of their specific disciplines. However, despite their significance, the communicative functions, discourse features, and textual patterns of academic book reviews have not been extensively studied.
This study aims to fill this gap in the literature by investigating the following research questions:
1. What are the discourse features and textual patterns of academic book reviews in English, particularly focusing on the evaluation section?
2. How do the discourse features and textual patterns of book reviews reflect the communicative functions and disciplinary norms of their respective disciplines?
3. How can the findings of this study inform the teaching and learning of academic writing and critical appraisal skills?
Methodology
The corpus for this study will be collected from academic journals in the fields of humanities and social sciences. The corpus will consist of book reviews published between 2000 and 20
