ThisreportaimstopresentthefindingsofastudyconductedtoexplorethephenomenonofvocabularyattritionamongChinesevocationalcollegeandpolytechnicstudentsintheirsecondyearofstudy.Thestudyaimedtoexaminetheextentoftheproblem,potentialcauses,andpossiblesolutions.
LiteratureReview
Vocabularylearningandretentionarecrucialelementsoflanguagelearning.However,researchhasshownthatsecondlanguagelearnersoftenexperiencedifficultyinretainingpreviouslylearnedwords.Vocabularyattrition,whichreferstothelossofpreviouslyacquiredvocabularyknowledgeovertime,isacommonprobleminlanguagelearning.
Severalfactorshavebeenidentifiedaspotentialcausesofvocabularyattrition,includingalackofexposuretothetargetlanguage,inadequatepractice,andlackofmotivation.Studieshavedemonstratedthatlearnersoftenlosewordsthattheydonotusefrequently,especiallythosethatarelowfrequencyorabstract.
ResearchMethodology
Thestudyemployedamixed-methodapproach,comprisingasurveyandinterviews.Thesampleofthestudyincluded100participantsfromvocationalcollegesandpolytechnicsinChinawhowereintheirsecondyearofstudy.Theparticipantscompletedavocabularytest,asurveyquestionnaire,andwereinterviewedtoprovidefurtherinformationontheirvocabularyacquisitionandretention.
Results
Thefindingsrevealedthatmostparticipantsexperiencedvocabularyattrition,particularlyinlow-frequencyandabstractwords.Lackofpractice,lackofmotivation,andlimitedexposuretothetargetlanguagewereidentifiedastheprimarycausesoftheproblem.Theresultsalsoshowedthatparticipantswhoengagedinarangeofself-directedlearningactivities,suchasreadingandwatchingEnglish-languagemovies,retainedmorevocabulary.

Theresultsofthisstudyindicatethatvocabularyattritionisacommonproblemamongvocationalcolleg
