AUZEL Centre National dEtudes des Tdldcommunications, 196 Rue de Paris, F-92220 Bagneux, France Blue single crystals of magnesium aluminium spinel doped with nickel have been pulled from the melt, by the Czochralski technique. The transmission spectrumof doped samples show three broad absorption bands. Accordingto the absorption map and the chemicalanalysisof these crystals,the effectivesegregationcoefficientof Ni 2+ in Mgml204 seems to be roughly 1.At T = 80 K, the expectedtuning range of the stimulatedemissionlies from 1.2 to 1.4 gm. 1. Introduction Mgl _ xNix A1204 has been synthesized before put- ting it in the iridium crucible, by a reaction of the Single crystals of oxides and fluorides doped mixed oxides MgO, A1203 and NiO at 1400°C. with transition metals are the most promising The raw materials used were: materials for infrared tunable lasers. Magnesium - Exal a: A1203 (Rubis Synthrtique des Alpes); oxide doped with nickel seems to be the best, but, - Grade 1 MgO (Johnson-Matthey Chem. Ltd.) unfortunately, single crystals of magnesia are not dried first at 1000°C; e
