TheassignmentfocusesonGreaterManchesterandspecificallyonanedgeofsettlementestatecalledWythenshawe.Designedinthe1920susingGardenCityprinciples,WythenshaweisoneofthegreenestpartsofurbanGreaterManchesterwithtreecoverageamountingtosome16.4%,doubletheaveragefortownsinEngland(8.2%).WithinWythenshawe,thereare21recognisedwoodlandsplusanumberofotherareaswithextensivetreecover.Someofthewoodlandareofhighecologicalvalue,e.g.BlackcarrWoodandPrincessSpinneyarebothSitesofSpecialScientificInterestandseveralothershavelocal‘SitesofBiologicalImportance’status.FurthermoreontheperipheryofWythenshawetherearetwoancientwoodlands,CotterillCloughandSunbankWood.
Manchester’sCommunityForest,CityofTreesaredevelopingthesecondphaseofabidtotheHeritageLotteryFundtotrytoacquirefundingtoimproveexistingwoodlandsandgreen-spaceswithinWythenshawebybringingthemintoactivemanagementandestablishingthemasacommunityasset.However,identifyingprioritiesforthemanagementofhabitatsatalandscapescale,suchastheWythenshawewoodlandsposesarangeofchallenges.Theseinclude:
