Maritimeshippingservesasthebackboneofinternationaltrade,facilitatingover80%ofglobal
tradevolume.However,thiscrucialindustryfacessignificantenvironmentalchallenges.Vessels
generatevariouspollutantsthatposesubstantialthreatstoboththemarineecosystemandpublic
health,includingsulfuroxides(SOx),nitrogenoxides(NOx),particulatematter(PM),and
greenhousegases(GHGs).Amongtheseenvironmentalconcerns,theshippingindustrys
contributiontoclimatechangehasdrawnparticularattention.Bothinternationallegislationand
localgovernmentalinitiativesserveaskeypolicyinstrumentsforreducingmaritimeemissions.The
establishmentofEmissionControlAreas(ECAs)requiresvesselstomeetstrictemissionstandards,
whiletheinnovativeGreenCorridorsinitiativecreatesspecificrouteswhereshipsoperateon
low-carbonfuels.Othereffectivemeasuresinclude,forinstance,speedoptimizationthroughslow
steamingandtheuseofshorepowerfacilitiesatports,allowingvesselstoconnecttolocal
electricitygridswhileberthedinsteadofrunningtheirengines.Thisprojectaimstoestimatethe
GreenhousegasesemissionsfrommarineshipssailbetweencitiesofChina’sGreaterBayArea
(GBA)andanalyzethecarbonreductionpotentialsofdifferentpolicyinstruments.
