Incorrectbeliefsaboutthepropertiesofmemoryhavebroadimplications:Themediaconflatenormalforgettingand
inadvertentmemorydistortionwithintentionaldeceit,juriesissueverdictsbasedonflawedintuitionsabouttheaccuracy
andconfidenceoftestimony,andstudentsmisunderstandtheroleofmemoryinlearning.Weconductedalarge
representativetelephonesurveyoftheU.S.populationtoassesscommonbeliefsaboutthepropertiesofmemory.
Substantialnumbersofrespondentsagreedwithpropositionsthatconflictwithexpertconsensus:Amnesiaresultsinthe
inabilitytorememberone’sownidentity(83%ofrespondentsagreed),unexpectedobjectsgenerallygrabattention
(78%),memoryworkslikeacamera(63%),memorycanbeenhancedthroughhypnosis(55%),memoryis
permanent(48%),andthetestimonyofasingleconfidenteyewitnessshouldbeenoughtoconvictacriminaldefendant
(37%).Thisdiscrepancybetweenpopularbeliefandscientificconsensushasimplicationsfromtheclassroomtothe
courtroom.
