Thisisastrategyformakingwomen’saswellasmen’sconcernsandexperiencesanintegraldimensionofthedesign,implementation,monitoringandevaluationofpoliciesandprogrammesinallpolitical,economicandsocietalspheressothatwomenandmenbenefitequallyandinequalityisnotperpetuated.Theultimategoalistoachievegenderequality.

Increasingattentionisbeingplacedongenderequalityissuesglobally,buoyedbyseverallegalandnormativeinstruments,conventionsanddeclarations.ChiefamongthesearetheConventionontheEliminationofAllFormsofDiscriminationagainstWomenandtheBeijingDeclarationandPlatformforAction.Thelatter,whichwastheoutcomeoftheUnitedNationsFourthWorldConferenceonWomen,in1995,emphasizesthekeyroleofmediatopromotegenderequalityinallspheres;allstake-holdersarecalledtojoinforcestocombat“stereotypingofwomenandinequalityinwomen’saccesstoandparticipationinallcommunicationsystems,especiallyinthemedia”.UNESCO’scommitmentandstrategytothisendispursuedthroughatwo-foldapproach:(i)gender-specificprogrammingand(ii)takinggender-focusedactionsinallofUNESCO’sfieldsofwork.
