FridaBengtsson,ofGreenpeace’sProtecttheAntarcticcampaign,saidthefindingsprovedthateventhemostremoteareasoftheplanetwerenotimmunefromtheimpactofmanmadepollution.

“Weneedactionatsource,tostopthesepollutantsendingupintheAntarcticinthefirstplace,andweneedanAntarcticoceansanctuarytogivespaceforpenguins,whalesandtheentireecosystemtorecoverfromthepressuresthey’refacing,”shesaid.

Sevenoftheeightsea-surfacewatersamplestestedcontainedmicroplasticssuchasmicrofibres.Sevenoftheninesnowsamplestestedcontaineddetectableconcentrationsofthepersistenthazardouschemicals—polyfluorinatedalkylatedsubstances,orPFAS.
