TheresearchwascarriedoutbythescientistsattheUniversityofCalifornia,intheUS.Theyvisiteda

localcatcaféoverseveralmonthstorecordvideosof53cats,collecting194minutesofvideos.Theyfound

thatthecatshave276differentexpressions.“Eachexpressionwasamixtureoflipdifferentfacialmovements,

whichincludedlicking(舔)theirnose,openingtheirmouth,orwideningthepupilsoftheireyes,”saidthe

scientists.Theyalsofoundcatsuse26ofthesefacialmovementsintotal,whichcanbemixedtoexpresshow

theyarefeeling.Dogsuse27facialmovementsandhumansuseatotalof44.

Outoftheexpressionstheyrecorded,45%werefriendlyand37%wereangry.“Afriendlycatmoves

itsearsandwhiskersforwardandclosesitseyes.However,anangrycatoftenflattensitsearstoitshead,

makesitspupilssmallerandlicksitslips,”saidtheteam.

Althoughtheresearchersaren’tsurewhatthecatsweretryingtocommunicatewitheachotherusing

theirfaces,theyplantostudycatsinotherplacestoimprovetheirunderstanding.Theyalsohopethatthe

researchcouldhelpanimalshelters(收容所)improvethewaytheylookafterthecats.Somepetownerseven
