ThisGuidesetsforthrequirementsforthefollowingoptionalnotations:

●Underwaternoise:UWN(Type)andUWN+(Type)

●Externalairbornenoise:AIRN,AIRN+andAIRN-M(a,b).

TheunderwaternoisenotationsUWN(Type)andUWN+(Type)areapplicabletoself-propelled

commercialandresearchvessels.TheexternalairbornenoisenotationsAIRN,AIRN+andAIRN-M(a,b)

areapplicabletoalltypesofvessels.ThisGuideoutlinestheprocessandrequirementtoobtainthese

notations.Itprovidescriteriaonnoiselimitsandrequirementsformeasurementmethodandmeasurement

datapost-processing.

Forunderwaternoiseemissions,theIMOandtheEuropeanUnion(EU)havemadeeffortstosupportthe

reductionofunderwaterradiatednoise.IMOMEPC.1/Circ.833GuidelinesfortheReductionof

UnderwaterNoisefromCommercialShippingtoAddressAdverseImpactsonMarineLifeandEUMarine

StrategicFrameworkDirective,2008/56/ECaddressconcernsaboutunderwaternoisepollutionaffecting

marinelifeandhabitats.

Forexternalairbornenoiseemission,manyportshaveraisedconcernsaboutthenoisepollutioninport

surroundings.Excessiveshipexternalairbornenoisedisturbsresidentslivingnearportsandlowersthe

environmentalqualityofportareas.
