Actually, as Hughes crossed the English Channel on 9 September, 1914, at 7:52 p.m. he dropped a message in a green beer bottle over the side of the ship and he died two days later in the war. 85 years later, the bottle was finally caught by Steve Gowan, the fisherman. Steve Gowan examined the letter carefully. It had the soldier’s name and army number, so he supposed that the message should be real. But how could he deliver it to the intended recipient? In 1999, the Internet was still in its early years. No way would he be able to find Hughes’s possible surviving family that way! So, what to do? Well, he put an advertisement in a local paper!
