In1962,hewaschosentobecomeanastronaut.In1966,hewentintospaceascommandpilotofGemini8.HeandDavidScottmanagedtojointwospacecrafttogetherforthefirsttimeinspace.However,ontheirwaybacktotheEarth,thespacecraftbeganspinningoutofcontrol.Armstrongreceivedtheordertocuttheflightshort.HesuccessfullybroughtthespacecraftdownintothewesternPacificOcean.On20July1969,ArmstrongbecamethefirstmantowalkontheMoon.TogetherwithBuzzAldrin,helandedthespacecraftApollo11ontheMoon.Hesaidthefamouswords“onesmallstepfor(a)man,onegiantleapformankind”ashesteppedoutontotheMoonssurface.
