becameinterestedinflyingwhenhetookhisfirstflightattheageofsix.Hereceivedhisstudentpilotslicencewhenhewas16.

Armstrongjoinedthenavyin1949andservedasapilotforthree

years.In1955,hebecameatestpilot.Heflewover1,100hoursandtestedalltypesofaircraft.;

In1962,hewaschosentobecomeanastronaut.In1966,hewentintospaceascommandpilotofGemini8.HeandDavidScottmanagedto

jointwospacecrafttogetherforthefirsttimeinspace.However,on

theirwaybacktotheEarth,thespacecraftbeganspinningoutofcontrol.Armstrongreceivedtheordertocuttheflightshort.Hesuccessfully

broughtthespacecraftdownintothewesternPacificOcean.

On20July1969,ArmstrongbecamethefirstmantowalkontheMoon.TogetherwithBuzzAldrin,helandedthespacecraftApollollonthe

Moon.Hesaidthefamouswordsonesmallstepfor(a)man,onegiantleapformankindashesteppedoutontotheMoonssurface.;

ArmstrongandAldrinwalkedontheMoonforabouttwoandahalf

hours.TheycollectedMoonrockstotakebacktotheEarthforfurtherresearch.WhenApollollreturned,thewholeworldwaswaitingto

greetthem.Theywereheroes.
