It is spoken by more than half of the people in the world. Some speak English as their mother tongue, and some speak it as a second language. There are so many people speaking it, with so many accents and so many newly created words, that it is impossible for anybody to speak 100% correct English, even for the British or the Americans. However, English is still a most practical tool for communication among people in all walks of life from different countries. By using it we can broaden our horizons and increase our knowledge in different fields such as business and commerce. Moreover, English is particularly useful in the fields of science and technology, especially with regards to computers and the Internet. Therefore, English is definitely an essential medium for communication. English is the principal language of Great Britain, the US, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many other countries. There are some 400 million native speakers, and it is the medium of communication for many millions more; it is the most widely used second language in the world.
