ABSTRACT
William Golding, the Nobel Prize Winner, was obviously one of the great novelists after Word WarⅡ. He wrote many novels, essays and poems. He became well-known after publishing his first novel Lord of the Flies, especially popular among teenage readers. Through telling a story of a group of young children stranded on an isolated island degraded into savagery from the original civilized, Lord of the Flies reveals that evil roots in human nature and the ill nature of human beings will arise without the control of civilization and the rationality will be beaten by brutality.
The theme of this novel has always been spotlight all the time. Based on the former study, this thesis is intended to analyze symbolism in Lord of the Flies so as to better understand the theme. The thesis briefs William Golding’s life and his novel Lord of the Flies, then it detailedly analyses symbolism in Lord of the Flies. Those objects, beast, conch and fire carry important symbolic meanings. Also, the main characters Ralph, Jack, Piggy and Simon have underlying meanings. Through symbols, William Golding depicts two camps, the goodness and the evilness, a series of disagreements and conflicts indicate that human rationality and goodness will be eroded by savagery and evilness without the constrains of civilized rules and regulations. The use of symbolism can help enhance readers’ understandings of Lord of the Flies.
