Unit One Use of Words 江西师范大学 商务英语写作 Teaching content: at the end of these two hours, the students will be able to: 1. distinguish general words and specific words; 2. avoid Chinglish Sentences; 3. understand denotation and connotation; 4. collocations. General and specific words: General words: 1) are used to show general ideas; Specific words: 1) provide more detailed and precise information about what they refer to; 2) make writing clear, exact, vivid, and striking. for instance, professional, is more general than scientists, doctors, teachers, lawyers etc., all of which are more specific. Compare: 1. a good man (general words) kind, honest, generous, sympathetic, warm-hearted, selfless, brave, honorable etc. 2. good food (general words) tasty, delicious, nourishing , rich, wholesome, fresh, appetizing, abundant; 3. laugh (general words) smile, grin, giggle, titter, guffaw, chortle. Using specific words should go along with providing details, and then there will be effective and impressive writing. Class Activity One: Rewrite the following sentence in more specific words: e g: At 50 yards he fell, and I helped him to his feet… He looked like he was going to cry, and said that he wanted to run with the others. Improved sentence: At 50 yards he stumbled and fell, and I helped him to his feet… He looked like he began to get teary-eyed and stammered that he wanted to run with the others. 跑了50码,他跌倒了,我扶他站了起来…... 他看起来像是哭了,说他想和大家一起跑 Avoiding Chinglish Sentences Please discuss the following sentences and try to rewrite them if necessary: I forgot my keys in the office. I left my keys in the office. The traffic is crowded in some large cities. The traffic is heavy in some large cities. 3. His body is very healthy. He is very healthy. 4.
