An essential feature of Western culture is the high esteem given to the word. It has always been necessary for Europeans to explain their opinions and intentions explicitly and consistently in order to make themselves understood. But their rules of logic are rigid and can lead to conclusions which do not conform to reality. This may be a weakness of European thought. New Practical English In Japan, there was no necessity for an explicit and coherent expression in speech. More than the word, reality itself has been of central significance for Japanese thought. And since in Japan there is no tradition of applying the rules of logic to nature and society, a pragmatic view and flexibility towards the requirements of reality could develop. 2. It is an essential element of European culture to focus on personal independence; however, this may lead to personal isolation. On the other hand, personal interrelation is a traditional feature of Japanese society; but it may also result in a feeling of dependence. 3. In Europe since everything should be judged rationally and dispassionately, feelings are suppressed or at least not revealed.
