Good morning, ladies and gentleman. Today, I feel honored to have the chance to share my ideas about how to teach the passage with the title “Rooting” for Words.
In the reading process, I will focus on students’ long-term development and enable them to use proper reading skills and strategies. In other words, students are guided to read efficiently and independently.
My teaching plan will include 4 sections. They’re analysis of the reading material, identifying the teaching aims, Identifying the difficulties and ways to tackle them and teaching procedures.
Section 1 Analysis of the teaching material
The selected teaching material is the importance of root words in increasing your vocabulary and reading comprehension, which is intended to develop the students’ reading strategy, that is, detecting words by rooting. After analyzing it carefully, I find the article has two unique characteristics. First, it’s a long passage with 705 words, much longer than the usual texts. Second, it deals with a new topic, that is, rooting for words, which is unfamiliar to most students because we senior school teachers mostly only talks about prefixes and suffixes. The material has two emphases: 1 The importance of rooting for words; 2 the applying of rooting for words
Section 2 indentifying the teaching aims
Based on the analysis of the teaching material, I have chosen the following as the teaching aims of my lesson:
The 1st aim: Students learn the skills and strategies to read a prolonged text.
The 2nd aim: Students get a better understanding of the importance of rooting.
The 3rd aim: Students are encouraged to apply the skills for “rooting for words” to enlarge their vocabulary and guess the meanings of new words.
The 4th aim: Students will build up confidence in vocabulary learning.
Section 3: Identifying the difficulties and ways to tackle them
Difficulties:
1 Many new words make the article difficult to understand
2 How to apply the skill to English learning
