Teaching Plan of Unit 1, Book 1 Growing Up Text A Writing for Myself Teaching Objectives: Students will be able to understand the author’s idea of growing up understand the structure of the text; master the key language points as well as the grammatical structures in text; conduct the theme-based reading, listening, speaking and writing activities of this unit. Time Allotment: Four periods (three for intensive reading and one for Exercises) Teaching Methodology: student-centered; audiolingual; translation; communicative; etc. Teaching Procedures: Pre-reading tasks (warm-ups) Listen to a song “When we grow up” by Michael Jackson and have students think of what growing-up means. What will you face, expect or enjoy when you grow up? The art of eating spaghetti Before class, T cuts a sheet of paper into many long, thin strips, which he/she brings to class together with a fork (Or: if possible, T brings a platter of boiled noodles to class together with a fork) T explains that spaghetti is Italian-style noodles, and that unlike some Chinese noodles, it will never taste pulpy and is usually boiled and served with sauce, not in soup. Usually you would put a fork into a plate of spaghetti, turn the fork several times so that spaghetti will wind around the fork, then place the fork into your mouth. It’s impolite to suck. Several Ss are invited to come up with “ proper ways of eating spaghetti” and demonstrate to the class, using the fork. Background information: the American educational system Grade schools in the U.S.: It is necessary to have some knowledge of grade schools in the U.S. because Ss have to realize that “ the third year in high school” (Para1) equals “the eleventh grade”(Para.9). U.S. students generally go through elementary schools (kindergarten to 5th or 6th grade), middle schools (grade6-8) or junior high schools (grade7-9), and high school (grades 9-12 or 10-12).
