3.1 Introduction of Thomas Hardy.
Thomas Hardy (1840-1928), the writer of Tess of the D’Urbervilles. Hardy was an English novelist and poet. Tess of the D’Urbervilles is his masterpiece and the most pastoral of Hardy’ novels.
3.2 Introduction of Tess of the D’Urbervilles
Tess is a beautiful, innocent country girl. One day, her father, John, knew that he, John Durberfield, is actually the descendent of the noble family of D’Urbervilles. He and his wife began to persuade Tess to claim kinship with the rich D’Urbervilles. And so the innocent Tess, who wanted to change the poor condition of the family, became a poultry keeper of D’Urbervilles. In there, Tess was raped by Alec D’Urbervilles, the dissolute and evil son of the rich D’Urbervilles family. Tess came back to home. After a while, Tess gave birth to a baby. Unfortunately, the baby died several months latter. After several years of bitterness, Tess determined to leave home. At Talbothays, Tess met Angel. They fell in love with each other. On their wedding night, Tess confessed her pass to Angel, but Angel could not forgive her and left her. Then the poor Tess found a job at another farm. At that time Alec D’Urbervilles turned up again and he bet Tess’s forgiveness. Then Tess’s father died, her family was expelled from their house. In order to help the family, the helpless Tess married Alec. Before long, Angel came back for Tess. Then the desperate Tess killed Alec and eloped with Angel. After two days, Tess was arrested and hanged.
