[Abstract] Objective T o elucidate t he usefulness of magnetic resonance imaging ( MRI) for the detection of parametrial in
volvement and lymph node met astasis in patients with cervical cancer Methods Fortyfive patients w ith iopsyconfirmed
cervical cancer w ho underw ent preoperative MRI retrospectively recruited. We evaluat ed the diagnostic performance of MRI
for the parametrial invasion and LN involvement using surgicopathologic findings as the reference standard Results The
sensitivity , specificity and accuracy of MRI in det ecting parametrial invasion w ere 800% , 914% and 889% respectively;
while clinical examinat ion were 500% , 829% and 756% respectively The sensitivity , specificity and accuracy of MRI in
detecting LN involvement was 556% , 944% and 867% respectively Conclusion Preoperat ive MRI is more useful for
the evaluation of parametrial involvement in cervical cancer than clinical examination Preoperat ive MRI shows high speci
ficity, however, the sensitivity is low for detecting LN involvement in cervical cancer Further studies are necessary to im
prove the sensit ivit y
