The head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) are caused by the tobacco and alcohol consumption and by the infection of high-risk types of human papillomavirus. Due to the lack of biomarkers for early detection and risk assessment, more than 50% of head and neck cancer patientsareoftendiagnosedatalatestage,andthefive-yearsurvivorrateislowerthan 50%.Thehigh-throughputanalysismethod based on the metabolomics technology has the potential to come up with tumor-associated biomarkers. This paper reviews the progressandchallengesofthemetabolomicstechnologyinitswayintothebiomarkerdiscoveryoftheheadandneckcancer,andthe futuredevelopmentisalsodiscussed.
