REC Evaluation Workshop 19.29.03final PAGE PAGE 6 Division of Research, Evaluation, and Communication: Evaluation Workshop – September 29, 2003 Connie Kubo Della-Piana The Division of Research, Evaluation, and Communication held the second of three workshops designed to develop a picture of the current state and future of educational research, evaluation, and communication in STEM education and the current and potential role of REC in those pursuits. Expert practitioners and recognized scholars The panel of expert practitioners and recognized scholars were Beatriz Chu Clewell, Urban Institute; Ernest R. House, University of Colorado at Boulder; Vinetta Jones, Howard University; Melvin M. Mark, Pennsylvania State University; and William Wanker, Education Commission of the States. The following set of questions guided the written responses and the discussion. What are the recent trends or directions (whether these be domain or topic specific and methodological in nature) in the STEM education research and evaluation field (as you define or understand it) and where do you think the field is headed in the next ~5 years? In what areas (domains, topics, methods) is the most creative evaluation research being done in your opinion, and where do you see opportunities for creativity that are being missed? What are three or four questions of national importance in educational evaluation where substantial progress has not been made versus the three or four where we seem to have a reasonable accumulation of knowledge? What are the major obstacles or threats to progress and the accumulation of knowledge in the field? Why do you think these are impediments and what do you think can be done (if anything) about them?
