There be结构的句子在英语里是一种特殊句式。句型中there本来是具有地点意义的状语主语，“be”后边的名词原是表语。随着这一句型逐步演变为表示多方面意义的句型，其中的there也逐渐失去了其地点意义。There的发音一般为[]，不发[]。应用这个句型时笔者认为应当注意：
1 There be结构可表达的意义
There be 句型表示“存在”，称there 存在句（there-xeistential sentences）。在不同的句式中，there的词性和句法功能不同。
1）There be句型中，there be接的名词前常常有不定冠词或某个定量或不定量的词语，即：a，another，any，much，no，several，some以及基数词等。句中的there为虚词（引导词或先行词），there不重读，没有词汇意义，只起引导一个存在句型。There位于句子主语的位置，作形式主语，也叫语法主语或表面主语。Be后面的名词或代词为概念上或意思上的主语，即真实主语。谓语be的数由后面的名词或代词的单复数决定，通常与其保持一致。 如：
There is an egg in the box.
There are four/several eggs in the box.
There is nothing in the box.
但在非正式英语中，后面的名词为复数时，有时谓语be也可用单数。如：
There’s some people in the reading room.
但there be 有一个就近原则。离它近的是单数用is，复数用are
如：There is some juice and some cakes on the table.
There is a pen and some books on the desk.
（不可数名词或者可数名词单数用 there is ）
There are some cakes and some juice on the table.
（可数名词复数用there are）
2）在一般疑问句和反意疑问句中，there为形式主语。
Is there any ink in the bottle？
Yes，there is. （No. there isn’t）
There，s nothing wrong， is there？
3）There to be句型中，there作及物动词或介词for的语法宾语时，there同时作不定式to be的逻辑主语。
She doesn’t want there to be a misunderstanding，她不想引起任何误解。
It is too late for there to be any buses.
太晚没有公共汽车了。
It is important for there to be a doctor present.
那个医生在场很重要。
There be结构用于let开头的祈使句时，there作let的宾语，在意义上作原型be的主语，如：Let there be light.让灯光亮着。
4）There作动名词的逻辑主语。
She was disappointed at there being so little to do.要做的事 这么少，她对此很失望。
5）在分词独立结构中，there作逻辑主语。如：
There having been no rain for a long time， the ground was burnt black by the sun.
由于很长时间没下雨，地面被太阳烤焦了。
6）There be结构可自由用于从句中，there作形式主语。
We want to know if there’s any one waiting.
我们想知道是否有人在等候。
He was the most naturally gifted allround cricketer there has ever been.
他是有史以来最有天才的球手。
