Deptement of Cardiology, China Medical University First Affiliated Hospital, Shengyang( 110001) , Liaoning Abstract Objective: To evaluate the ant ihypertensive effects of valsartan and to seek its other effects in addition to the lowering of blood pressure. Methods:All patients with essential hypertension were randomly divided into valsartan group and indapamide group. The office blood pressure, echocardiography, serum nitric oxide( NO) , angiotensin ( Ang ) , serum aldosterone, lipids, serum uric acid, electrolyte,fasting blood glucose(FBG) ,fasting insulin( Flns) ,liver function, kidney function,routine blood test and routine urine test w ere examined before and after treatment. Insulin resistance( IR) was expressed by the ratio of Flns to FBG( Flns/ FBG) . Questionnaire on sexual function was made in married males before and after treatment. Results:After 8 weeks of treatment,t he total response rates in both groupsw ere similar(67. 5% versus 66.7%) . Left atrial diameter index w as improved markedly (p 0.05 respectively) . T he ratio of the peak velocity of late filling to that of early fill ing ( A/ E) was decreased obviously (p 0.01 and p 0.05 respectively) in both groups.In valsartan group.Ang and serum NO
