Because if you do not understand the History of Great Britain you cannot understand why Great Britain is the way it is today. Julius Caesar - Important Julius Caesar Invaded Britain in 55 BC. Why important ? – The Roman invasion had a huge impact on Britain. The invasion by Julius Caesar had a large impact on Britain: 1. Language; many words in the English language come from Latin – the language spoken by the Romans. 2. Literacy; the Romans were the first to bring any form of alphabet to Britain. The alphabet we use today is the Roman one. 3. Infrastructure; the Romans were the first to build real roads in Britain. They also developed city’s and brought with them a lot of engineering expertise. 4. Economy; the Romans started to develop trade routes with Britain. This was crucial for Britain’s economic growth. Their construction of roads and markets was important in this. 5. Law; the Romans brought with them the first signs of any real structure to the Law system in Britain. Their laws are still the base from which we work on today. King Arthur - Famous King Arthur is believed to have been a Romano-Briton warrior who tried to fight off the invading tribes sometime between 400 – 600 AD. After 400 years the Romans left Britain. They were ‘kicked out’ by invading ‘Germanic tribes’ such as the Saxons and Angles. They came from what is now Denmark. Sweyn Forkbeard - Important Sweyn Forkbeard was a Viking who invaded Britain in 1013. He was one of the first Viking Kings of England. The Vikings had a big influence on British culture – especially in the north of England. William ‘The Conqueror’ – Important Famous William the Conqueror invaded Britain with a Norman army in 1066 AD. He defeated the Anglo-Saxon King Harold at the Battle of Hastings. The Norman Invasi
