English and Chinese proverbs, as an essential part of the language, come from real life, which can more or less reflect people’s views and behaviors or system of the society,and of course provide a little glimpse of or clues to the sexism in language. Thus sexism in language as well as culture is also shown in Proverbs. And proverbs are a more representative and more persuasive vehicle of researching on sex discrimination in language and culture. Like other languages in the world, English and Chinese contain large number of proverbs handed down through generations, which cover a vast range of human culture. To start with, the paper analyses relationship between proverbs and culture, and try to prove that sexism in proverb is a mirror to the culture and is a reflection of culture. Then the paper analyses sexism in English and Chinese proverbs in greater detail by using universal evidence. Finally, the paper traces the cultural factors of sexism in English and Chinese proverbs. In ancient time, the thoughts that males host females and the treatment of women as inferiors to men are in vogue. Men are always at superior positions to women in the social economy, in the politics, as well as in the people’s traditional ideas, so the idea of sex discrimination has reflected in the language, especially in proverbs. By this paper writer hopes that it can make People take serious concern of sexism in language, thus helping people find some effective ways to lessen, or clear up sexism in language and daily life.
