高中英语口语素质教学初探
Introduction
Nowadays, the phrase “Quality-Oriented Education” becomes such a popular and striking term throughout the whole county and the educational system. However, the oral English teaching has become the most serious problem in the senior high school teaching.
Teaching of speaking skills is one of the most difficult tasks for any ESL teacher in the senior high school. It is because successful speaking skills are acquired over time and with lots of practice. In China, the English learning has been mistakenly regarded as knowledge cramming instead of skill training, and most people just learn it to pass kinds of examinations. As the school focuses too much on knowledge, then the teacher becomes the center and dominator of the class. Students just passively listen to the teacher, take notes, memorize the key points, and do tons of homework after class. They are not active participants in the class, and the teacher uses the same standard to shape or value the whole class. Then, students are afraid of coming to the class gradually, and they do not want to practice any English by their own. They are forced to do the exercises or various drills by the examinations and the teachers. No wonder, there are so many students who have been studying English for more than four years but still can not express themselves clearly in simple and accurate English. In fact, to learn a foreign language is to practice a lot. Practice plays a key role in language learning. After that, language learning is skill training. If English learning has been regarded as skill training, the development of individuals becomes the focus and the teachers try to involve various ways to dig out the individuals’ potential and innate ability to train them to master this skill based on their individuality. Then in class, the students become the center. They all are initiated to speak, to practice, and to enjoy the target language environment. The teacher acts as a facilitator, a helper, and
