This portion of the intestine is around 1.5m in length and, in comparison with the small intestine, is wider (around 6.5cm) and has a more muscular wall. It is delineated at the proximal end by the ileocaecal valve and at the distal end by the anus. The large bowel can be divided into five segments: caecum and ascending colon transverse colon descending colon sigmoid colon rectum. Surgical resection for CRC requires careful attention to the vascular supply and usually also involves removal of regional lymph nodes.
